DETROIT (AP) — Minnesota Twins starter Brian Duensing left Wednesday night's game in the fifth inning after being hit in the left ankle by a batted ball.

Alex Avila led off the inning with a one-hopper that hit Duensing squarely on the ankle. He took one step toward the ball before collapsing in pain. Twins catcher Joe Mauer threw Avila out at first before Duensing was surrounded by teammates and the Minnesota training staff.

After a few moments, he was helped to his feet and limped off the field under his own power. He was replaced by Kyle Waldrop with the Tigers leading 2-1.

The Twins announced later in the game that Duensing had sustained a bruised left ankle, but that X-rays were negative.
