Stocks fell in light trading Monday during a shortened holiday trading session with lawmakers running out of time to reach a budget deal that would prevent the U.S. from going over the so-called fiscal cliff. Stocks closed early Monday before the Christmas. The Dow Jones industrial average lost 51.76 points, or 0.4 percent, to close at 13,139.08. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 3.49 points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,426.66. The Nasdaq composite index fell 8.41, or 0.2 percent, to 3,012.60. For the year: The Dow is up 921.52, or 7.5 percent. The S&P is up 169.06, or 13.4 percent. The Nasdaq is up 407.45, or 15.6 percent.
