A stock market rally lost steam Wednesday after mixed earnings from U.S. companies added to fears about Europe's economic slowdown. Several big consumer goods companies warned that weak demand in Europe was cutting into their revenue. That followed worrisome economic news from England, France and Germany, where growth had offset recessions in other European countries like Italy and Greece. The Dow Jones industrial average finished up 7.04 points, or 0.1 percent, at 13,175.64. The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 0.87 point, or 0.1 percent, to 1,402.22. The Nasdaq closed down 4.61 points, or 0.2 percent, at 3,011.25. For the week: The Dow is up 79.47 points, or 0.6 percent. The S&P 500 is up 11.23 points, or 0.8 percent. The Nasdaq is up 43.35, or 1.5 percent. For the year: The Dow is up 958.08 points, or 7.8 percent. The S&P 500 is up 144.62 points, or 11.5 percent. The Nasdaq is up 406.10 points, or 15.6 percent.
