THE FAMILIAR: Despite worries and skepticism about the economy and the benefits of European economic integration, a Pew Research Center survey found no desire in countries that use the euro to return to their former currencies. THE HISTORY: The euro launched in 1999 and now is used by 17 countries. THE DILEMMA: Greece, epicenter of the European debt crisis, is trapped between indefinite austerity required to comply with its bailout and a currency exit that could be catastrophic. But even in Greece, 71 percent of those polled want to keep the euro, compared with 23 percent who want to return to the drachma. Two-thirds of Germans want to keep the currency even though the country has to make the biggest contributions to the financial bailouts.
